Sweat Local Columbus is all about the places that get us moving and sweating, but we’re also about the places that fuel our bodies so that we can perform our best. Local Roots is a restaurant in Powell that features a menu full of locally-grown produce, herbs, and all sorts of other healthy menu items. And when we say locally grown, we mean either from the local farmers or just a mile down the road at their own farm.
Local Roots’ menu has something for everyone. With plenty of vegetarian options to go along with a gluten free menu (as well as traditional favorites like pizzas, ribs, and sandwiches...seriously, try the Turkey Bacon Avocado). The bread they use on most of their sandwiches comes from Beehive Bakery, which you could hit a golf ball to from their back patio.
What’s great about Local Roots is that they have a feature menu that changes weekly. The kitchen is given a lot of freedom to experiment with seasonal flavors and they always come up with something creative. This summer, Local Roots raised honey bees. With the honey that was produced, they’ve been able to make salad dressings and it’s made its way onto the feature menu on a number of dishes. It’s also available to take home!
The honey is just an example of what Local Roots does so well, and by the way the place fills up every day of the week, you can tell the community is behind one of its favorite restaurants. Owner Jessi Iams is also a big supporter of an active lifestyle, as there are regular fitness classes that she hosts in the beer garden. From spinning to yoga and barre classes, you’ll see it all. If there isn’t a class going on, you’ll likely see some live music outside when the weather is nice (and a live jazz band indoors on Tuesdays when the weather cools).
Local Roots has been thriving since it opened seven years ago thanks to Jessi’s vision of making quality food from the heart and really caring about the people that walk in the door (you’ll probably see her behind the bar or helping out in the beer garden). If you haven’t already, make a point to check out Local Roots and see why it’s one of the best places in Columbus to enjoy a meal.
