The thought of Crossfit scared me, which I think is probably a common feeling for anyone who hasn’t ever done that sort of workout. Crossfit gym’s are “cliquey,” the workouts involve moves I don’t know, the lingo is confusing, and the people in there are probably so far ahead of me both physically and with the workouts that I’ll never catch up. All these thoughts and doubts raced through my mind as I walked through the door and met Darin, the owner of Crossfit 928.
Let me preface this by saying I had toyed with the idea of Crossfit over a year ago, but a bad first experience at a bad gym left a bad taste in my mouth. Once we moved to Powell, I figured I’d give it another shot at a different gym. I won’t say I was immediately put at ease when I walked into 928, but I liked Darin. He looked the part of a Crossfit gym owner; workout gear and a few visible tattoos, and a shaved head (is this a thing?).
He talked me through the program and pricing, then had me stretch out as I was about to get my first taste of a crossfit “WOD.” I was surprised to see that the gym wasn’t full of hard bodies like I’d imagined (though there were some), but “normal” looking people who weren’t trying to compete in the Crossfit Games, but rather just wanted to get a great workout.
As for the program, I would have to complete a three-class “foundations” course that would pair me one-on-one with a trainer so I could learn the movements for classes. Even after completing the foundations class, I was still a little hesitant on some of the moves, but I had a good idea of what to do and the trainers are always moving around the class and helping to correct people’s form and make sure they get the most out of their workouts. I struggled through that first workout, but I remember how much fun the class was and how welcoming people at Crossfit 928 were as they tried to get to know me.
Thanks to Darin and Crossfit 928, I’m not as intimidated to walk into a new gym or studio and try something new. I’ve kept up with Crossfit, and am happy to say that while I still confuse some of the names of the specific lifts I have to do, my form and confidence level has greatly improved, as has my figure and self-confidence. I don’t think I’m anywhere close to the level as some of the top performers in the classes, but I’ve learned that I am ultimately competing with myself to get better. My wife Kelly also goes and she loves it too. There are lots of women there and they all feel comfortable working out...no creeps or judgements.
One of the best things about Crossfit 928 is the multitude of classes and times available at their Powell location. They offer both Crossfit and cardio-heavy “Burn” classes that are both included on the membership. Every Saturday morning, there is a team competition workout that allows me to get to know different people in the gym, and get a great workout in a competitive environment.
For anyone new to Crossfit like I was, or even experienced Crossfitters looking for something a little different, Crossfit 928 is a great place to check out. It’s as low-pressure of a gym experience as I’ve ever had. The coaches are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and they want to get to know your story and help you push you past your comfort zone.
